Building a home with shipping containers need not be a matter of function before form. Now I know a lot of people immediately think of an industrial harbour scene, rusty, noisy, smelling of diesel oil and fish when they just hear the word shipping container, but again, it’s a matter of perception!
If you hear ‘baby’ – odds are you conjure up a pretty picture of a clean, cuddly bundle with a smile (ok, ok – they do a lot of screaming as well…) smelling like baby powder and baby shampoo. But ask a gynecologist his/her picture. A bloody, wrinkled, wriggling mass of slippery flesh which suddenly, mercifully gasps for air, fills its lungs and starts hollering for the A team.
Both are humans and need TLC to have both, function and form. Same with shipping containers!
God bless!

Just struck me – if God does not exist, Christ is a myth ……… hey – then WE HUMANS are in charge, is that not great? (that’s probably why this planet is in such a mess…)
God bless,

Hi,
This is a self-made draft of our planned home – small changes have since been made…
We will be using three 12m high cube containers arranged in a U formation with a roof covering all of them. The inside space (courtyard) will become the living room space and the front (open side of ‘U’) will have glass sliding doors.
Our home will have solar warm water with gas backup, 10,000l rainwater storage and other sustainable features as electricity outages are due to hit again (never mind the increase in electricity cost) and the quality and future availability of potable water is also going down the drain – no pun intended…
In as far as copy right allows, I will in due course provide you with more detail regarding the plans.

WELCOME!!!
Hi,
I’m Gabriël, my wife is Hester. We are Christians.
Together we are building a house with shipping containers – a 1st for South Africa, that is in as far as a municipality has approved the building plan!
In this way we can build for less than 50% of the present square meter building cost of R5600 (US$740) – this also opens endless possibilities for the low income groups of South Africa.
Feel free to follow our journey and comment!
God bless,
Gabriël & Hester Smit
